With the upcoming release of "Hamlet 2," yet another film that I'm never going to see, I find myself wondering if the the marketing strategy that has clearly worked so often in the past for filmmakers is going to work here again. That strategy is what I like to call "blasphemarketing." It's quite simple, really. Put something in your film that will give fundamentalist Christians something to be outraged about. Like, say, this (warning-- pottymouthed blaspheming):
Then, wait for the conservative blogosphere and Rupert Murdoch's shouting heads to light up in outrage. Once they do, you can say...hey! It's not just a mediocre comedy! It's a controversial mediocre comedy!
So I watch this excerpt, which is being heralded by online reviews as the defining moment of the film. It is purportedly either the height of blasphemy or, like, the funniest thing EVER, imho, lol.
But I'm not outraged. I'm not roaring in laughter at it's naughtily twisted irreverence. I'm just...bored. It doesn't come across as creative, unless the idea here was to make a musical sequence that's intentionally tedious and lyrically trite.
Just 'cause our Super Secret SUV BumperSymbol is the fish doesn't mean we always have to take the bait.
Oh, people just take themselves so seriously. "OMG! They're mocking my belief system! Now, I know that it's fine to do that to every other religion out there, but mine's special!"
It's only blasphemy if you believe in it.
Personally, I think God has a sense of humor. I mean, look at armadillos. That's some funny sh*t. Jesus probably saw that video and said, "Please. My abs are way better than that guy playing me."
I have to agree, I find it a bit boring. If someone wants some blasphemy, I think SouthPark does a good job at that, which I will admit I do enjoy SouthPark, even if they make fun of things I believe in.
Pretty good post. I just came upon your blog and wanted to say that I have really enjoyed reading your blog posts. There should be something you like: http://www.supraskytopfootwear.com/
